A fantastic report from formula one fan 🪭 Jo Davis 🏎️ 🏁🏎️🏁🏎️

The Silverstone 10k is the opening event of the East Midlands Grand Prix. As an F1 fan, this had to be my first 10k event in May 2024, and I loved it so was always going to be back. Last year, my friend Karen helped me get around – we were a minority on the track not interested in lap times or speed, with one goal – complete, not compete (unusual for a Grand Prix!) This year, I was excited to be the cheerleader and pacer for my friend Shannon as she tackled her first 10k, and we planned to walk/run our way round. We lined up with runners from clubs throughout the Midlands, other members of the F1 fan base and me as a lonesome Hailsham Harrier, ready for ‘lights out and away we go’ (IYKYK). Again, the goal was completion; we were the back markers, giving Kick Sauber a run for their money and I was the final finisher (someone has to come last and I was determined it wouldn’t be Shannon and that we wouldn’t DNF!) The support was fantastic, with marshals all the way around cheering and lots of people still waiting at the end for us to cross the line (no chequered flag tho – bit disappointing!) We stayed at the trackside hotel and were gutted to find out the next day that we’d missed a Mercedes test session and the chance to meet Kimi Antonelli, the hottest rookie on the grid this season! We’ll be back next year (hopefully with a bigger contingent of Harriers!) to take it on again and this time, we’ll be speeding around, with lap times to make McLaren look slow!
