Hi. I ran cross-country for my school Selhurst Grammar in the early 60’s under the tutorage of international 800m man Mike Fleet. Chosen more for my enthusiasm than ability, but had the odd good race.
I took up road running in 1978, before the boom, inspired by the New York Marathon. I joined City of Plymouth AC and was with Chris Brasher’s Sweat Shop party that travelled to NYC in 1979. Chris wondered if London had the heart to host a marathon…….
I moved from Devon in 1982 and joined Eastbourne Rovers before transferring to Hailsham Harriers on its formation in 1984.The standard was much higher then and my subsequent pb’s – including 57:31 for 10miles, 1:16:02 for HM and 2:44:57 for full – only seem fast as I get older!
The key to any modest success has been staying trim and a very active job as a postman. Now in my seventies, I favour short sharp training runs these days and love to race as often as possible up to 10k. Anything further, the challenge is to get round in one piece!
God willing, I hope to be competitive as long as possible. Best notify my next of kin, this wheel shall explode…!
